The evolution of food packaging

The use of polyamide in advanced packaging formulas provides numerous must-have advantages for food brands and retailers. It has excellent mechanical properties, extending shelf life, and thereby reducing food waste. These properties make it possible to reduce packaging thickness (in a process called downgauging), saving materials and lowering costs. Additionally, advanced packaging with polyamide is also more transparent than other solutions, which creates trust and confidence among consumers while meeting the rising demand for circularity and recyclability.

More with less

Greater puncture resistance which saves materials

A thin 30 µm layer made of polyamide provides the exact same strength as 200 µm of LDPE, upholding packaging properties while providing an important reduction in thickness. *

The mechanical properties of polyamide include tensile strength and better puncture resistance, a key factor when used as packaging for high-demand products such as seafood and bone-in meat.

Flexible, versatile, adaptable

With polyamide, flexible packaging adapts to every need

Polyamide is also an ideal partner in flexible packaging, such as vacuum pouches & bags, thermoformed packaging, sausage casings, and shrinkbags. When used for thermoformed packaging (often used for cheese), polyamide can be drawn to a depth of up to 85 mm, with a thickness of 50 µm. *

An excellent barrier

Freshness, extended

Polyamide provides an excellent gas/oxygen barrier, which keeps food fresh for longer. This ensures the health and safety standards required of food-contact materials, of course, but it also is a major contributor to reducing food waste—no small matter considering that 17% of all food around the globe is wasted in households, in the food industry and in retail combined.

Oxygen barrier:

As a food industry business, you undoubtedly care about everything which helps safeguard quality and which guarantees the conservation and value of your products.

Advanced flexible packaging which contains polyamide is the best way to meet these needs, keeping your products safer, fresher and more appealing on the shelf or in the refrigerator section.

By joining APA you can contribute to the growth and general adoption of advanced flexible packaging along the supply chain—starting from a network of producers of raw materials, machinery and film for flexible packaging— thereby guaranteeing higher-quality packaging for your products in the future.
